What Is a Myers Cocktail?
It is the formula most vitamin drips descend from, it is named after the doctor who devised it, and it has been studied far less than its popularity suggests.
If you have looked at any IV drip menu, you have seen its descendants. The Myers cocktail is the formula most IV vitamins are built from, and nearly every clinic offering Myers IV therapy has adjusted the recipe to taste.
It is named after John Myers, a Baltimore physician who used intravenous nutrient infusions with patients from the 1950s onward. He did not publish a formal protocol. What is known about his approach came largely from a colleague who took over some of his patients after his death and later described and standardised the formula — which is why you will see slightly different versions all carrying the same name.

Read that table carefully, because it is where a lot of marketing quietly overreaches. Those are descriptions of what each nutrient does in the body generally. They are not claims that infusing more of it produces more of that effect in someone who is not deficient — which is a different proposition, and the one that actually needs evidence.
What the evidence actually shows
Honestly: not much, in either direction. The Myers cocktail has been used for decades and studied very little. The controlled trials that exist are small, and the best known of them — in fibromyalgia — found that people given the infusion improved, but so did people given a placebo infusion, with no statistically significant difference between them.
That result is worth sitting with rather than skipping past. It does not show the infusion is useless — it shows that in that trial, the improvement people reported was not attributable to the ingredients. Feeling better afterwards is real. Attributing it confidently to the vitamins is the step the evidence does not support.
There is one uncontroversial part. If you are genuinely deficient in something, correcting that deficiency helps — that is established medicine. The question is whether the average person on holiday is deficient, and mostly they are not. There is also a simpler mechanism at work in any drip: a litre of fluid does something measurable for someone who is dehydrated, entirely separately from what is dissolved in it.
Who should not have one
This is the part that gets least attention and deserves the most. An IV infusion is a medical procedure, and the ingredients are not inert simply because they are vitamins and minerals.
- Kidney disease — impaired kidneys cannot clear a load of minerals normally, and this is a serious contraindication
- Heart conditions, and anything affecting your heart rhythm — magnesium and calcium both act on the heart
- A history of kidney stones, which is relevant to high-dose vitamin C
- G6PD deficiency, which makes high-dose vitamin C genuinely dangerous and is the reason reputable providers test for it first
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding, without your own doctor's sign-off
- Any regular medication — interactions are possible and worth checking rather than assuming
Side effects are usually minor — a cooling sensation as it runs, a metallic taste from the B vitamins, bruising at the site, and a strong flush of warmth if magnesium runs too fast. The rarer risks are the ones that make supervision matter: infection, vein irritation, fluid overload in someone whose heart or kidneys cannot take it, and allergic reaction.
The short version
The Myers cocktail is a decades-old vitamin and mineral infusion with a long history of use, a thin evidence base, a mostly mild side effect profile, and a real list of people who should not have one. If you are curious about it, that is a reasonable position. If you have been told it treats a specific condition, ask to see what that claim is based on.
